French Ministry of Culture Grant
Description
Designed to support translation of French books into other languages, this grants covers the cost of translation per se, not costs incurred for production or promotion. The commission meets third a year, in February, June and October. For those works which it selects, the commission proposes a subsidy ranging between 20% and 50% of the cost of translation. This grant does not cover works in the public domain, scholastic books, practical manuals and handbooks, or periodicals.
Terms & Conditions
French publishers who hold rights to the works in question submit the application to the French Ministry of Culture. Subsidies range between 20% and 50% of the cost of translation. Applications are filled out in French and in liaison with the French publisher who holds the rights. The translated work must be remitted to the Centre national du livre (CNL) within thirty six (36) months of the decision to grant the subsidy. The grant is paid upon receipt of a copy of the published translation and of an acknowledgement of payment signed by the translator. The work in translation must appear with the following statement: “This work is published with support from the French Ministry of Culture/Centre national du livre.”
Deadlines
- 20 February for the May-June session
- 10 June for the October session
- 31 October for the January-February session

French Book Office London Burgess Translation Programme
Description
The Burgess Prize gives direct funding to publishers to assist with translation costs via the French Book Office in London (up to 30% of translation costs).
The next round of applications for books to be published in 2023 and 2024 is open from October 2022 and will close 9 December 2022.
Terms & Conditions
Publishers interested in the programme must provide:
- a completed application form
- a formal letter of application and outline of the company’s translation policy
- a catalogue and backlist
- the list of previously published French books (if applicable)
- the list of the French book(s) to be translated during the coming year
- a copy of the book(s)
- copies of the contracts with both French publisher and translator
- a proposed publicity schedule detailing how the publishers intend to publicise the author in the UK, in the run-up to, and surrounding the book’s publication.
Please note that if your application is accepted, acknowledgements must imperatively include the Institut français logo (download it here) and the following sentence: “This book is supported by the Institut français (Royaume-Uni) as part of the Burgess programme”.
You will also be requested to provide us with a copy of the top part of a bank statement with the company name, account number and sort code and the IBAN and bic code or an official document issued by the bank.

Acquisition of Rights Grant
Description
The Institut français helps British publishers offset the cost of acquiring the rights to French works. Grant beneficiaries are selected by the Institut français in Paris. The amount awarded cannot exceed the amount of the advance agreed upon with the French publisher for the acquisition of rights and varies from 500 to 7,000 €. British publishers wishing to participate and seeking a grant through this programme should get in touch with the Book Office team in London, who will help them liaise with Paris.

This is a bi-annual programme. In order to be processed, applications forms and relevant documents should be sent to us. We will enter them online.
The first session opens in December until January, with results announced in February, the second session runs from June to August, with results announced in October.

- signed convention with the Institut français. The English version is for reference only. Please fill out and sign the French version
- A copy of the acquisition of rights contract signed by both the English and French publishers

Note: The budget will need to be balanced, dated and signed by the Director of your publishing house.
*The French Ministry of Finance exchange Rate should be used to convert British Pounds into Euros. If the date on which the contract was drawn up appears on the document, use that date to calculate rate of exchange (not the date on which the publisher/author signed the contract.)
If the grant is awarded, the following sentence will need to be printed on the copyright page of the book: “Cet ouvrage a bénéficié du soutien des Programmes d’aide à la publication de l’Institut français”.
Support for Translators

Description
Provides funding for translators wishing to stay in France in order to translate French works in the fields of literature or humanities.
Terms & Conditions
The translator must be working on a commissioned translation and have a contract with a publisher. Grants of 2000€ a month for 1 to 3 months are awarded by the Direction du livre after consultation with a committee of translators, publishers and Ministry representatives. This committee meets during the last quarter of each calendar year. Applications should be sent to the Direction du Livre through the French Book Office in London.
