Discover the greatest French philosophers and their impact on modern French society and beyond. 

 

Objectives: Through figures such as Henri Bergson, Simone Weil, Jean-Paul Sartre and Michel Foucault, you will learn about the key philosophical movements that shaped French culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.  

 

Learning approach: We will read key texts and discuss philosophy’s role in French society and beyond. Through a participatory approach, you will acquire a diverse and transferable vocabulary while learning about the history of ideas. 

 

Resources: The course will be based on articles, essays, radio programmes and videos provided by your tutor. You will familiarize yourself with the material which will then be analyzed, discussed, and contextualized in class. 

Tutor: Benoît Loiseau is a writer, journalist and scholar. He holds a degree in philosophy from the École Normale Supérieure (PSL) and recently completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh, where he has taught French literature and philosophy. He is currently at work on his first book.

Communicate in French on Economics, Business and Finance.

For those wishing to speak French with confidence in a professional setting, better understand their business partners and follow conferences and seminars in French.

Tutor: The tutor has many years’ experience in teaching French as a foreign language as well as a background in international relations, economic development, finance and business.

Aims: To develop your communication and debating skills and improve your listening comprehension using authentic documents.

Teaching approach: There will be discussion (e.g. on French and international news), debates and activities addressing economic affairs (banking, finance, insurance, business, international relations, etc.) in a dynamic way.

Course materials: Authentic documents (newspaper articles, magazines, radio and television clips and blogs) will help to consolidate the learner’s written and oral French (correcting accent and syntax, distinguishing different registers, understanding the implicit) and facilitate quick and fluent speaking.

The course is spread over 3 terms, but you can join at the beginning of any term.

  • Autumn term: Introduction to the French Legal system, Government and Legislative institutions, Legal professions, French courts and their proceedings
  • Winter term: Business and Company Law, Competition and Consumer Law, Property Law, Tort, Employment Law, the French Tax and Social security system
  • Summer term: European an International Law, Human rights, French Administrative Law, Environment, Arbitration, Family and Succession Law.
