POL | 1972 | dir. Andrzej Zulawski, with Malgorzata Braunek, Michal Grudzinski, Leszek Teleszynski
A special screening of Andrzej Żuławski’s controversial masterpiece The Devil accompanied by a live music event comprised of a Polish only DJ set.
The Devil, similarly to many of the other greatest works of Polish Cinema at this particular time, was abandoned by PRL censorship for 16 years and returned to screens only in 1988. The action of the feature takes place in 1793 during the Prussian army’s invasion in Poland. Jakub, a young Polish nobleman, is rescued from imprisonment by a stranger who seeks to discover other conspirators known to the protagonist. Jakub subsequently follows his saviour across war-torn Poland, and, traumatised by what he has seen, begins to commit several gruesome murders.
The Devil was scored by the late, great Andrzej Korzyński and the screening will kick-off with a Polish only DJ set from Andy Votel and Doug Shipton from Finders Keepers Records.
The soundtrack from The Devil has been released by Finders Keepers Records.
