One of the year’s most energetic French films, Lola Quivoron’s Rodeo is an action-infused drama about a young woman from the banlieue who wants in on the very male subculture of illegal motocross racing or ‘rodeo’. Charismatic newcomer Julie Ledru plays Julie, an inexperienced but fearless rider who is also extremely effective at acquiring fancy bikes by devious means, making her own place in this underground world. This character-centered film is an audacious, emotionally charged and politically incorrect drama that was rightly awarded the Jury ‘coup de coeur’ award in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard.
