Shot in glorious black and white by Christian Matras, Paris Blues is a snapshot of a particular period where Paris provided a refuge for African American artists. Amidst the beatnik cool of Left Bank jazz clubs, Ram Bowen (Paul Newman) and Eddie Cook (the late Sidney Poitier) are jazz musicians who live for music. When they meet with two young American girls, Lillian and Connie, who are vacationing in France, Ram and Eddie must decide whether they should move back to America with them or stay in Paris for the freedom it allows them. Against the backdrop of music (scored by Duke Ellington) and moonlight, the four of them find themselves falling in love.
