Considered one of the greatest films of all times, La Règle du jeu (The Rules of the Game) is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners in which a weekend at a Marquis’ country château lays bare some ugly truths about a group of upper class acquaintances.
La Règle du jeu was subjected to cuts after the violent response of the audience after its premiere in 1939. The original negative was destroyed during World War II and was only reconstructed in 1959. Since then, it has not ceased to attract and amaze viewers of all generations.
