After filing for bankruptcy, record shop owner Vernon Subutex finds himself abruptly out on the street. His former source of aid, friend and popstar Alex Bleach has been found dead of an overdose, not before passing on to Vernon the tapes of his final interview. As Vernon roams the streets, sofa surfing across Paris, he is tracked by a cast of characters intent on getting a hold of the tapes, with not totally pure motives.

An often-scathing satire of French society, Vernon Subutex roams across classes – both political and social – and gives the reader an unprecedented vision of contemporary Paris.
