Il Sorpasso

In the heat of the August fair holiday, Bruno (Vittorio Gassman) cruises the streets of Rome in his powerful Lancia Aurelia Sport. Quite by chance, he meets Roberto (Trintignant), a young university student. Roberto is fascinated by the carefree, easy life Bruno leads and agrees to spend the day with him. Often considered as Dino Risi’s masterpiece, this cult commedia all’italiana has seldom been shown in the UK. It features a young Jean-Louis Trintignant in his first Italian role and in one of his few comedy roles.

The screening on 4 December will be preceded by an introduction to Trintignant’s Italian films by Professor Richard Dyer (King’s College London)
