In half a century, French animation has risen to the third place in the world, behind the USA and Japan. As the original inventors of a technique that was industrialised on the other side of the Atlantic, French artists and technicians were able to make a name for themselves through sheer perseverance and creativity. Resisting the American giant, embracing technological developments and convincing public authorities to support it, French animation embodies the success of a cultural model based on diversity. French Animation, This Other Cinema retraces the odyssey of the men and women of this too little-known cinema.
Followed by 1932 short animated film The Idea by Berthold Bartosch
About The Idea
The film stars a naked woman, representing the conception of an idealistic thinker’s idea; as she goes out into the world, we follow the effects on society. Filmmaker Alexandre Alexeieff himself described Bartosch’s methods as “like Renaissance painters’ layer by layer, thus obtaining incredible fineness of tone”. And added “It was Bartosch who first dared to give animation the dimensions of great art”.
