The Earrings of Madame de...
100 mins
in French with English subtitles
France | 1953 | b&w | dir. Max Ophüls, with Danielle Darrieux, Charles Boyer, Mireille Perrey
Ophüls’ sumptuous tale of adultery in Belle Epoque Paris revolves around a pair of earrings. Countess Louise (Danielle Darrieux), the wife of a wealthy general, secretely sells the earrings given to her by her husband (Charles Boyer) on their wedding day, and finds herself involved in a chain of misunderstandings.
One of the most cherished works from director Max Ophuls, Madame de… is a profoundly emotional, cinematographically adventurous tale of deceptive opulence and tragic romance. Ophuls’s adaptation of Louise de Vilmorin’s incisive fin de siècle novel employs to ravishing effect the elegant and precise camera work for which the director is rightly renowned.
